What an Online CAD Viewer Actually Does

An online CAD viewer renders technical design files in a web browser without requiring any software on the viewer's device. This includes 3D models that can be rotated and inspected, 2D drawings that can be zoomed and panned, BIM models with structural and spatial data, and technical PDFs.

ShareCAD handles the rendering server-side so the experience works consistently across devices and operating systems. A client on a Mac, a contractor on a Windows laptop, or a stakeholder reviewing on an iPad all see the same file without any setup.

This is different from a CAD application. ShareCAD does not let you edit or create files. It is a viewing and sharing platform, purpose-built for delivering technical files to people who need to see them, not modify them.

Most files open instantly in the browser with no extra steps. Certain advanced formats require a short processing step to enable full in-browser viewing, ShareCAD handles this automatically and it is included in your plan. See pricing.

What "No Download" Actually Means in Practice

When someone sends you a CAD file and asks you to review it, the traditional path looks like this: download the file, figure out what software opens it, install a viewer or trial license, wait for it to load, and then actually look at the file. That is four steps before you have seen anything useful.

With ShareCAD, the recipient receives a link. They click it. The model or drawing loads in the browser. They review it. That is the whole process.

"No download" also means nothing accumulates on the recipient's machine. Files are not saved to their Downloads folder or emailed back and forth. The source stays in the sender's ShareCAD account, and the link controls who can see it and when.

  • No software installation required
  • No account needed to view a shared link
  • No local file created unless the recipient explicitly downloads
  • Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android

Speed and Convenience for Both Sides

The benefits show up differently depending on whether you are the one sharing or the one reviewing.

For the sender

  • Upload once, share to anyone via link
  • No need to export to a simpler format first
  • Control who can access the file and for how long
  • Update the file in place without resending
  • Restrict it to view-only so nothing is downloaded

For the recipient

  • Click the link, see the file immediately
  • No software to install or license to acquire
  • No account required to view
  • Works on any device with a modern browser
  • Can download the file if they need a local copy

When Teams Use an Online CAD Viewer

Browser-based CAD viewing fits naturally into a range of everyday workflows.

Quick client review

Send a design model to a client before a progress meeting. They open it in their browser, review the geometry, and arrive with specific feedback. No preparation call needed to help them get a viewer installed.

Contractor access to drawings

Share a drawing set with a subcontractor via a secure link. They view the drawings in the browser on site. Access ends on the expiry date you set, when their scope is complete.

Remote team review

Distributed teams collaborate on files without needing the same CAD applications or versions. Everyone accesses the same file through the browser, reducing version confusion.

Technical sales

Share a product model or custom design with a prospect during the sales cycle. They view the 3D model in the browser without software, which keeps the conversation moving without a demo call.

On-site reference

Access a model or drawing from a phone or tablet on the construction site or factory floor. No laptop required.

Supported File Types

ShareCAD supports a broad range of technical design formats across 2D drawings, 3D models, BIM, and documents. Native formats render directly in the browser. Autodesk and other proprietary formats require an Autodesk conversion and are included with a ShareCAD subscription.

The Limitations of Desktop-Only CAD Workflows

Desktop CAD applications are the right tool for creating and editing technical files. For sharing and reviewing, they create unnecessary friction.

  • License costs for viewers, many desktop CAD applications require a full or viewer license even to open a file. This is a real barrier for clients and external reviewers.
  • Version compatibility, a file saved in a newer version of software may not open in an older version, causing back-and-forth between sender and recipient.
  • OS and device limitations, most desktop CAD applications run only on Windows. Clients on Mac or mobile have no path to view the file.
  • File size over email, most email clients cap attachments at 10-25MB. Technical files routinely exceed this.
  • No access control after sending, once a file is emailed or downloaded, you have no way to withdraw it or stop it being forwarded.

Browser-based viewing solves each of these for the review and delivery part of the workflow, while leaving the creation and editing part to the tools designed for it.

Why Browser-Based Tools Are Becoming the Standard

The shift toward browser-based tools in technical industries is not primarily about convenience. It is about reducing the coordination overhead required to share information with people outside your organization.

As teams become more distributed and projects involve more external stakeholders, clients, contractors, regulators, procurement teams, the assumption that everyone has the same software breaks down. A browser is the one universal interface.

Browser-based platforms also give the file owner more control. When a file is in the cloud rather than in someone's inbox, you can replace it, expire it, and control whether it can be downloaded at all. That is not possible with an attachment.

ShareCAD is built specifically for this part of the workflow: getting technical files to the right people in a viewable, controlled, and professional way.
