Why Use a Browser-Based IAM Viewer

  • No Inventor license needed, View IAM assembly files without an Autodesk Inventor subscription
  • Full assembly visibility, View all components, sub-assemblies, and their spatial relationships in the browser
  • Works on any device, Inventor is Windows-only, ShareCAD works on any browser and OS
  • Secure sharing, Share assembly models via expiring links with optional password protection
  • No account for recipients, Clients and manufacturers open the shared assembly without signing up

What Is an IAM File?

IAM is the native Autodesk Inventor assembly file format. An assembly combines multiple individual parts (IPT files) and sub-assemblies into a single product design, defining how components are positioned relative to each other through constraints and mates. IAM files are central to mechanical engineering, machine design, and industrial product workflows.

Opening an IAM file natively requires an Autodesk Inventor subscription. An IAM viewer online through ShareCAD removes that requirement: the assembly is processed via cloud translation and renders in any browser for anyone with a link.

Teams sharing Inventor assemblies with external parties, clients, contract manufacturers, procurement, can upload the native IAM file and send a ShareCAD link. No STEP export required, and the recipient sees the full assembly in their browser.

IAM Viewer Use Cases

Client assembly approvals

Share Inventor assemblies with clients for design sign-off. They navigate the 3D assembly in their browser without any CAD software.

Manufacturer and supplier review

Send IAM files to contract manufacturers for quoting and DFM review. They assess assembly geometry without an Inventor seat.

Procurement and sourcing

Procurement teams and component suppliers can view full assembly designs via a browser link during sourcing discussions.

Cross-functional design reviews

Share assemblies with non-CAD stakeholders, marketing, sales, project management, who need to understand the product without Inventor access.
