What Is a SketchUp File?

SketchUp is widely used across architecture, interior design, urban planning, and product design for its approachable modelling workflow. SKP is its native file format, storing 3D geometry, materials, layers, scenes, and components. It is particularly common in early-stage design and client visualization work, where the speed of modelling outweighs the need for parametric precision.

Opening a SKP file outside of SketchUp requires a subscription (SketchUp Pro) or the limited SketchUp Viewer app. A SketchUp viewer online through ShareCAD removes that requirement. The model is processed once, and then anyone with the link can view it in their browser.

Architects and designers who use SketchUp for client visualization benefit from sharing a browser link rather than requiring clients to install SketchUp Viewer or waiting for a rendered image. The client views the SketchUp model in browser, rotating, zooming, and reviewing the design directly.
